You Might Be a Rude Pedestrian

It has been growing. Slowly over the past few years it has grown more rapidly than in years past. As the days pass, it grows even more. Growing so large in fact that I can no longer keep my mouth shut. For fear of exploding it must come out. I can take it no longer. I’ve had enough.

After one too many close calls, I’m over it!

I have officially reached my limit and can not contain myself any longer.

There is a growing trend in parking lots across the country. Rude pedestrians are walking carelessly everywhere putting themselves and the safety of their neighbors in danger.

I have had it up to “here” and well beyond with pedestrians in parking lots. There is no longer any regard for the cars driving through the parking lot and navigating the aisles. 

It is called a parking lot for a reason, cars park there. It is not a people lot. Yes people drive those cars, but if you walk in a parking lot you must take care to look out for your safety.

At first I thought it was a “younger” generation problem. Perhaps parents of my generation were too busy to teach their children to safely navigate a parking lot. They were never instructed to look both ways, give right of way to cars, or to never assume that a car would stop if it was driving in the parking lot.

However, it is no longer only the teenagers and young twenty somethings that are stepping out of the store without regard for on coming traffic. Young and old alike do not give as much as a glance either direction before stepping out into on coming traffic.

Now the tables have turned, it is the drivers that are on high alert for the possible wayward pedestrian walking in the parking lot or out of the grocery store doors.

We as the drivers have to always be on alert so as to not harm a careless and frankly clueless sorry excuse for a human.

Are people seriously that self absorbed these days that they do not care or have consideration for the drivers in the parking lot? DO they want to get hurt so they can sue and win some money?

What is the motivation behind this new and incredibly dangerous trend?

Just this afternoon, I was pushed over the edge. I had been teetering on the cliff of frustration for a very long time but today I had enough.

I ran quite a few errands, did some grocery shopping, and enjoyed time at a coffee shop.

While walking from my car to the grocery store each time I happened to be near another pedestrian that was also walking in the parking lot. EVERY time the other pedestrian walked straight across the driving lane without so much as a glance to the left or the right to check for on coming traffic.

Whereas I stopped, looked and often time waited for the oncoming car that had just slammed on it’s brakes to avoid the careless and clueless pedestrian walking next to me that bolted into traffic.

When the drivers realized I wasn’t going to walk into traffic without acknowledging them and waiting for a signal to wait or go, they graciously waved me across. Just like the old days. 

Anyone else remember those days? I’d go grocery shopping with my Mom and it was a given that we’d stop just outside of the grocery store doors to look for on coming parking lot traffic. We’d either wait until the car passed or the car would stop and wave us across.

What happened to those gestures of common courtesy?

Where did our care and thoughtfulness of our neighbors disappear to?

Where do pedestrians nowadays find their complete disregard for the drivers in the parking lots who also happen to be their neighbors? Why are they so rude and clueless?

It is an honest question, that I truly want to discover an answer for.

Adults older than myself, who most assuredly grew up in the day when you waited and looked for oncoming traffic, no longer give hardly a glance when walking out of a grocery store or crossing the flow of traffic in a parking lot. Why? What happened to these adults?

I am purposeful in the training of my own children while we are in parking lots. Never do I walk out into traffic with them. I always point out those that choose unsafely when walking in the parking lot. I use these careless pedestrians as examples of what not to do and why we don’t behave as they do.

It might be small, but my children will be different. They will not be like young adults of their generation and walk all over a parking lot as if they own it. They will not be sucked into their phones or off in their own mental world without giving a second thought to the safety concerns around them. They will look for traffic. They will wait for cars. They will NOT disrespect their fellow neighbors by assuming that they will stop when a pedestrian carelessly walks in front of their moving car.

This new and careless trend has to stop. It simply has to stop. 

Parents, I implore you to stop this bad habit if you do it yourself while walking in a parking lot. Please also teach your children to respect the cars in a parking lot. Don’t ever assume that a car will stop for you as you walk across the flow of traffic. Chances are they are just as distracted as you are and the outcome of that scenario will not be pretty.

Drivers and pedestrians alike need to care for one another, show common courtesy, and look out for each others safety.

Cake
  1. 1 medium baking apple
  2. ⅔ cup applesauce
  3. ¼ cup brown sugar
  4. ¼ cup granulated sugar
  5. 2 flax eggs (2T ground flax with 6T warm water, let sit)
  6. 1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk
  7. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  8. 1 tsp. Apple pie spice
  9. 2 tsp. Baking powder
  10. ½ tsp. salt
Crumble Topping
  1. 4 Tbsp. brown sugar
  2. 4 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  3. 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  4. 1 Tbsp. non-dairy butter, softened
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Grease the bottom and sides of a square 8x8 pan well with coconut oil.
  3. Peel and chop apple into small bites, I like to use a good tart Green Granny Smith to offset the sweetness in the cake.
  4. Sprinkle about 1 T. brown sugar over the top of apples.
  5. In the bowl of a stand mixer combine sugars, eggs, and applesauce until combined.
  6. In a separate bowl mix flour, baking powder, apple pie spice, and salt well.
  7. Add the flour a bit at a time to your mixing bowl until thoroughly mixed.
  8. Pour milk into batter and mix 1 more minute.
  9. Pour batter into prepared pan over apples.
  10. Combine brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter in a small bowl.
  11. Work together with a fork until crumbly.
  12. Sprinkle evenly over top of batter.
  13. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  14. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Saying Goodbye to Classical Conversations

Homeschooling for our family signifies a certain level of freedom, independence, and family unity. As a homeschool family we are not tied to a school calendar or someone else telling us when and where we need to be. It fits our family dynamics and character traits that we want to teach our children.

Rewind 2 years to the 2014-2015 school year and I was at my wits end. I had an 8th grader, 5th grader, 2 grader, and 3 toddlers that year. To say that I was at my wits end at the close of each school day was an understatement. It took everything I had most days to keep the 3 youngest out of trouble and quiet enough for the older 3 to get a little bit of work done. Because of this dynamic my older children were quickly learning that they didn’t have to do their school work. Their academics were slipping simply because I didn’t have the time or mental capacity to manage them, the toddlers, a business, family, and a home all at the same time.

When the year came to a close I began to consider our options for the following year. I knew I wanted something with more structure for my older children. A place where they would experience positive peer pressure to excel at their studies. Classical conversations, a classical based homeschool community had been on my radar in years past but the timing for us to join was never right.

However at the close of the ’14-’15 school year I felt that our time had come to try out a local community. 

That fall we joined a wonderful community in our town and I saw my children excel and shine again. It was wonderful. Not only were they learning and growing but they were building friendships. Because of our success that first year it only seemed natural to join another year.

Our second year of classical conversations started this fall. I was excited because all of my children were of age to be in Foundations or higher. I was looking forward to my littles learning alongside their older siblings and joining us in weekly review exercises.

That is until I had a change of heart.

I don’t know what started the change but from the beginning of the new school year I struggled to find peace in our community and CC studies. I no longer felt a sense of community or belonging in our group. My children were not learning in their weekly class time. 

I no longer felt a connection to the classical model of homeschooling to the level which is required for participating in a CC community. I had moved away from my Charlotte Mason heart to join classical conversations and in the end that had been a very poor choice on my part. While I still enjoy and will continue to use certain aspects of the classical method, my heart truly lies with Ms. Mason and her style of learning.

The CM method I feel fits our family and the freedom that embodies the purpose behind homeschooling. Mason is a huge proponent of freedom and learning in a relaxed community environment.

However, I had committed to participating for the entire year but just a few weeks in and I was already dreading each week of community. Despite the financial commitment I knew after considerable amount of prayer that God was calling us away from our CC group. 

I don’t know what He has in store for my family but I do know that I need to follow His lead and obey His calling. It is not my job to question. It is my job as His daughter to obey.

So here I am, free of a homeschool group and back to co-op free homeschooling as in previous years. I am looking forward to our freedom. We have our Thursdays back again to do as we want. I am not tied to a curriculum or program that I am not 100% on board with. I will miss the friendships I have developed over the past year but in this season of life my family is my priority and most important ministry.

Our oldest son will continue with the challenge program because it is a good fit for his needs. However, at this time there no plans for our 5 other children to continue in the classical conversations community.

If you find yourself in a similar place with a homeschool group or community situation, please know that you are not alone. If you feel unsettled, listen to that feeling and pray for God to make your decision crystal clear. Follow His guidance, He will not let you down or abandon you in your time of need.

I know plenty of families that absolutely love classical conversations. But I also know that it isn’t a good fit for every family. Our family is one of the latter.

Ingredients
  1. 2 cups quick cooking oats
  2. ¼ cup real maple syrup
  3. ½ -¾ cup dried cranberries
  4. ¼ cup coconut oil
  5. 2 flax eggs (2T ground flax with 6T warm water, let sit)
  6. 1 tsp.pumpkin pie spice
  7. 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
  8. ¼ tsp. salt
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350℉.
  2. Line baking sheet with foil, parchment paper, or a silpat mat. If you do not already own a silpat mat and you enjoy baking I recommend grabbing one. They help your food to cook evenly, make cleanup easier, and cuts out the waste of throwing foil away repeatedly.
  3. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl until well mixed, mixture will be a sticky still. These breakfast cookies are meant to be just lightly sweetened but you can add a bit more maple syrup to increase the sweetness.
  4. Scoop heaping tablespoons of mixture onto prepared pans, flatten gently with your palm.
  5. Bake for 16-18 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Allow to cool completely.
  7. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  8. Heat for 10-15 seconds in the microwave or toaster over to warm.
Great tip
  1. Get creative and customize these breakfast cookies with your favorite add ins like pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or even chocolate chips. Stir in a ¼ cup of whichever one you like, if mixture is too dry to hold together add a bit more coconut oil.

Go for a walk or run.  It is the classic exercise that almost everyone can do, and is typically absolutely free.  While you may want to invest in good walking shoes, some quality winter weather gear and maybe a safety reflector for walking in darker hours – it is a free and easy method of getting exercise.  Walk around your neighborhood, in the local mall, around a high school track or football field or even in laps inside your own home.  

Use free videos online for workout tips.  If you already have a streaming program like Amazon Prime, Hulu or Netflix you may be able to find workout videos free to use in your home.  If not, never hesitate to check places like Youtube or Vimeo for classes or videos that have been shared.  

Use household items as weights.  If you can’t afford to buy a few hand weights, you can exercise for free using things like canned goods, milk jugs filled with water or dry beans, and even use things like lifting bags of flour or sugar to incorporate more strength training into your routine. 

Walk instead of drive to local stores and businesses.  Depending on what part of the city or country you live in, you may be able to easily walk to the grocery store, school with your kids or even to work.  Leave your car at home and walk or bicycle as often as you can. 

Swim at your community pool, lake or beach.  While not everyone has access to a community pool, some do.  If you have a community pool or you live close to a lake or the ocean you can easily get some free and fun exercise by swimming.  Playing in the water with your kids is a great way to exercise, but taking laps on a regular basis can build up strength in your arms, legs, back and even abdomen. 

Play sports.  Whether you simply shoot hoops in the driveway with your kids or join a local softball league playing sports or playing with your kids on a regular basis is a great form of exercise.  It can easily be done as a family at home for free, or in a local group for a small fee if you can afford the investment. 

Go for bike rides or hikes.  Not everyone likes being outside, but if you do then take advantage by going for a bike ride or a hike with your family on a regular basis.  Both of these fun outdoor activities are free, easy to accomplish and easy to adapt to your individual physical needs.  

If you are determined to get fit this year but don’t have the budget for a regular gym membership then this list of ways to exercise for free is the perfect place to start.  Work with what you are physically and financially able to do.  The important thing is to simply get moving to improve your health.

Eliminate soft drinks and sugary beverages.  Not only does sugar turn to fat causing weight gain, it can create blood sugar issues, sugar highs and crashes as well as additional cravings.  Eliminating soft drinks will get rid of the added sugar and calories along with tons of chemicals and dyes that are unhealthy.  If you are drinking diet soft drinks, the sugar substitutes in them are even harsher on your system.  Remove the sugar drinks from your diet as part of your New Year’s resolutions and include more water and fruit sweetened beverages like teas.   

Get enough sleep at night. Skipping sleep is one of the worst things you can do for your health.  Not only does your body struggle to fight off infection when it isn’t well rested, it can cause weight gain and increased risk for a disease.  Your body needs sleep not just to focus better during waking hours, but to digest food properly, burn calories and heal itself from within.  The average adult needs 7-10 hours of sleep per night.  Make sure you are regularly getting enough sleep as one of your healthy New Year’s resolutions this year. 

Eliminate processed foods from your diet.  Processed foods come in the form of not just cakes, cookies and chips, but also the meal kits, and processed canned soups we often eat.  Focus on making more food from scratch using organic and non-GMO products when available.  Try to include more grass-fed, antibiotic-free and free-range meats in your diet as well to keep your focus on fewer chemicals and more nutrient dense foods your body needs for fuel. 

Increase your current exercise level.  Even if you have chronic pain, injuries or restrictions, there are always small ways to increase your current exercise level.  Check with your physician prior to a new exercise regimen for safety, but focus on adding in things on a gradual basis so as to not overwhelm yourself.  Go for a walk.  Get up and move around your house.  Do a few leg lifts or crunches each day.  Even little additions of movement in your life can make a big difference in overall health. 

Get rid of negative people in your life.  Just as much as your physical health may need improvement, your emotional and mental health is vital.  Negativity, abuse and frustration from other people often bring down your own state of mind.  Make a list of people who automatically come to mind when you think of the negative people in your life.  Choose to keep those in your life who you feel are valuable and perhaps just struggling at the moment, and eliminate any others that are not a vital part of your life.  Get rid of the negativity from people around you and see your emotional well-being improve.  This may simply mean blocking their social media statuses and keeping them at a distance, or it could mean removing them completely from your life.

Safe and Natural Alternatives to NSAIDs

Safe and natural alternatives to anti-inflammatory OTC drugs

It has been nearly a month since I badly injured my elbow. The impact of falling on my arm was such that I was certain I had broken it. Thankfully x-rays showed that there wasn’t a break. However, I am still experiencing pain and discomfort from the bruising. After seeing an orthopedist today I was told that my bone is still badly bruised and I have an injury to the nerve that innervates the elbow joint and runs toward to hand. It will take an additional 2-3 months minimum for these injuries to heal. I was advised to take a popular NSAID twice a day until the bruising and nerve injury heals.

Before deciding to take any drug long term it is very important to consider the long term side effects. Even common over the counter drugs like NSAIDs have dangerous side effects when taken long term. According to this article, long term side effects of NSAIDs main affect the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. The article also reports that more than half of all bleeding ulcers are caused by NSAIDs.

Considering the side effects of NSAIDs, I would prefer to take a natural inflammation reducer rather than risk internal injuries and long term damage.

As suggested in this article, I will be adding ginger and turmeric to my daily regiment until my elbow injury heals and my range of motion returns to normal. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric is responsible for the herb’s anti-inflammatory properties as well as its characteristic yellow color. While ginger contains gingerols, compounds which have potent anti-inflammatory effects.
